… and not for the first time.
Loews Coronado Bay Resort will be hosting their 5th annual surf dog event and competitive hounds from across the States (20 of them to date) will be taking part in the hopes that this year, they will be the one to lope away with the trophy. They are hoping for at least 60 entrants.
Competition will be fierce and the events will be split up as follows:
- Heat One: Small Surf Dogs (40 pounds and under)
- Heat Two: Large Surf Dogs (41 pounds and over)
- Heat Three: Tandem Surfing (dogs and humans)
- Heat Four: San Diego Law Enforcement Challenge
This canine event is to be held on Saturday, 22nd May, at Imperial Beach, and there will be a wide range of activities as part of the surfing fun. It’s $50-55 per contestant, depending on the category of dog, but that comes with a great goodie bag. Those of us on two legs can come and watch for free. So if your dog (or you) have any aspirations for greatness do contact the event organisers asap and book yourselves in. It’ll be a fun day out for everyone!
Each dog/team will have 10 minutes to catch their top two waves, and will be scored on confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to “grip it and rip it.” The Coronado Surfing Academy will provide surf boards and assistance during the competition.
If your dog’s a surfing champion, you’ll score a ton of great prizes, including the ultimate pet vacation at Loews Coronado Bay Resort … and endless bragging rights.
And if your dog has never surfed before but is very keen to give it a go there will be beginner’s surfing lessons, surfing by small dogs and large, and tandem surfing lessons for those dogs surfing with their humans.
Thank you to figure1a for showing us what it’s all about…
Needless to say the event has become a hugely successful fundraiser for pet-related charities. This year’s event will benefit the San Diego Police Department Canine Unit through the San Diego Police Foundation.
