re-sized Mavericks big wave

Maverick’s prize money has doubled!

Hey you guys. Have you heard the good news?

Maverick’s Surf Contest organizers announced Tuesday that the payout for the big-wave surf contest has been doubled from $75,000 to $150,000, making it the largest known prize purse in big-wave surfing history.

They are understandably proud of their achievement that, when everyone is gripped with fear about the world’s biggest recession for decades, they have been able to raise, and not only raise but double, the prize money.

“There really is no amount of money on Earth that could compensate the guys for the risks they take out there at Maverick’s,” Keir Beadling, CEO of Mavericks Surf Ventures, wrote in an e-mail, “and I honestly believe they’d surf in the contest with no prize purse. Many of them have said as much.”

Mavericks Surf Ventures secured the initial $75,000 prize purse — the same purse offered at last year’s contest — in late December on a donation from Moose Guen and Jane Sutherland of MVision, a private equity advisement firm. On Tuesday, Barracuda Networks, Inc., a Web security company, doubled the payout.

The competition itself is tentatively scheduled for FRIDAY.

Surf forecasters are watching a swell coming in from Japan and are hoping that it will create 20 – 40 ft clean faces. If this happens then contest director Jeff Clark will give the 48-hour call out to the 24 invitees and numerous alternates — many from Santa Cruz. If not, Clark has until March 31 to give Maverick’s the green light.

As is customary, the winner of the competition should take home the lion’s share of the prize money but such is the camaraderie of this event that this isn’t what happened at Maverick’s last year – the six finalists made a pact to split the pot evenly, each taking home $12,500.

Here’s something to whet your appetite. We will keep you informed of the big event, but in the meantime thanks to rancidbry for this video.
