25-yr old Austrian Michael Schitzhofer is a team rider for Best Kites. He started kiting in 2000 and with his aggressive, fast and technical style has fast become a force to be reckoned with in the PKRA world.
Michael Schitzhofer favourite places to kitesurf…
…are his home town on the banks of Lake Neusiedlersee in Austria and Cape Town. Cape Town one can understand, but one might wonder about Lake Neusiedlersee… until one knows a bit more about it that is. It borders the Austrian-Hungarian border and is the second largest steppe lake in Central Europe. It’s huge – 315 km² of which 240 km² is on the Austrian side and 75 km² on the Hungarian side and from north to south it is about 36 kms long, but it is no more than 1.8m deep. It is known as the “Sea of the Viennese” as it offers plenty of opportunity for water sports.
In fact they pride themselves on their ideal wind conditions and the Mediterranean climate which make the region a top destination for sailors, windsurfers and kite surfers. Not a bad place to grow up.
“For me it’s not about the move. It’s more about satisfaction about how it feels and looks,“ he says.
A good piece of advice from Michael to all us wannabes out there: “Never give up. Never train alone.”
