He was the youngest (19 in 1992) and oldest (36 in 2008) ASP World Champion of all times. If he hadn’t taken a break between 1999 and 2001 this American professional surfer from Cocoa Beach, Florida would probably have taken even more world championships and would hold an impossible-to-beat world championsip lead in surfing records.
At the Big Wave Contest at Teahupo’o, Taihiti, he became the first surfer ever to be awarded 2 perfect scores for a total 20 out of 20 points.
His favourite wave spots are Sandspit in California, Pipeline in Hawaii, Miramar in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Kirra in Australia, Jeffreys Bay in South Africa, Minis in Ireland, Taghazout in Morocco, Soup Bowls in Barbados and Sebastian Inlet near his home in Florida. Some of these waves we’ve written about before, others we obviously need to do some homework on! Watch this space…
His other achievements include a band called The Surfers, which he and friends formed and which released an album in 1998. He has performed several times on stage with other bands, acted in the popular TV series Baywatch, been in many surf films and appeared on a reality show. He’s found the time to write 2 autobiographies and he’s a passionate ocean conservationist and has a relationship with Reefs Neck which is involved with protecting temperate reefs in California.
And on top of all this he has found the time to put together his own video game, Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer.
In recognition of his achievements and character, the United States House of Representatives honoured him for his “outstanding and unprecedented achievements in the world of surfing and for being an ambassador of the sport and excellent role model.”
This boy is here to stay…
