A natural snowpark with glacial rocks – the perfect playground

Kalle Ohlson sent me this cool Pirate video filmed at Riksgränsen – the ski resort that is situated on Sweden’s border above the polar circle, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. It used to be covered by gigantic glaciers and because of that has flat rocks to play with, and play with them they certainly do…

Kalle lives to snowboard and has been lucky enough, and good enough! to be able to make it his living. What’s his favourite moment on the mountain? “When the sun is shining and everybody is stomping tricks! And you have beer to celebrate it all with!”

Born in Sweden, Kalle Ohlson has incredible talent and a mellow attitude which combines well with the Pirates and their ethos on life and has been a part of the Pirates team for quite a while now. He met a part of the crew in Åre many years ago and the following year was lucky enough to shoot with them on one trip … and it went from there. How important is it to him to be a part of Pirates? “Pirates is my tool to be able to show my riding, so it´s more then important! I’ve been filming for pirates for many years now, and they’ve always had my back so THANK YOU very much!”

The skiing season at Riksgränsen is from February to June. From mid-May the lifts operate under the midnight sun.

Riksgränsen has another claim to fame. It is the place where various European car manufacturers test their pre-production cars. Photo-snipers are prevalent, attempting to get the first spy-shots of new models, though their activities are frowned upon by local hoteliers who value the custom of the manufacturers. The same manufacturers frequently use the location for winter launches, bringing journalists from across the world to drive the new cars on snow covered roads and on courses specially prepared on frozen lakes. I should imagine it is a favourite with Top Gear!

Never really considered waxing the rocks….might have to try it this winter. Those were some pretty sick shots.
