It was a very successful weekend for Innsbruck’s Snow Festival. Three highly entertaining days on the Maria Theresien Strasse, beginning on Friday the 3rd of February at 13:00 o’clock and ending on Sunday night. The burn ‘Stairset,’ featuring two 8m rails and a giant ‘shooter’ obstacle were totally shredded in a weekend of spectacular tricks and treats, culminating in a four man super final tie breaker.
The hero of the night was Noa Gadelius was crowned king of the Burn Fire and Steel contest. His frontside lipslide 270 out on the burn shooter was just enough to pip wildcard contestant Iceland’s Gulli Gudmundsson to the overall title.
The Billabong Air and Style 2012 has again attracted the world’s best snowboarders to Innsbruck’s Bergisel Stadium. Peetu Piiroinen, Sebastien Toutant, Seppe Smits, Mark McMorris and Werner Stock led an all star cast striving to make snowboarding history. As temperatures plummeted to abnormal conditions in the fully sold out Bergisel Stadium, the 13000 onlookers didn’t seem to notice the cold as the best snowboarders in the world battled it out head to head for Billabong’s Air and Style competition and the coveted Ring of Glory.
Hitting record numbers of viewers, the LIVE stream meant that the whole world was watching as riders such as the Burns team, Ulrik Badertscher, Ståle Sandbech and Werni Stock threw it down on the big air and finessed their run on the burn can and rail stair-set section.
2012 Billabong Air & Style in Innsbruck
The riders didn’t fail to astound the charged crowd; and live act Sido built up the excitement for the explosive Super Final. It was Peetu Piiroinen from Finland who, having been runner up last year, rightfully claimed the much sought after Ring of Glory with his Backside 1260 Mute Grab. “It was a great night, and it felt really good being here. This was definitely one of the hardest competitions for me, with everyone stomping it,” he said.
For the first time in the event’s history the TTR World Snowboard Tour Big Air Champion was crowned at the event and it was Seppe Smit whose name will go down in the sports’ history books as the man who was crowned TTR Big Air Champion 2012. “I was very happily surprised,” commented Seppe Smits. Congratulations came immediately from 3 time TTR Tour winner Peetu.
Next up is the Livigno Burn River Jump. From 21st – 23rd February, this will be the 6th time the TTR 5* event has been held here in this Italian resort.
