Well, I’m not sure Nessy herself will put in an appearance, but thousands of music fans, intrepid mountain bikers and spectators will be turning up.
Two events are being held simultaneously in The Highlands, this weekend.
The Fort William Mountain Bike World Cup.
This competition attracts about 500 competitors from 35 countries and thousands of spectators. The 2006 World Cup drew an estimated 17,000 people.
The cross country, downhill, 4-cross and trials are being staged on tracks and courses at the Nevis Range ski area and Leanachan Forest on the outskirts of Fort William, Lochaber.
The event is one of 10 for elite mountain bikers taking place in Europe, Canada and Australia.
But did you know that the public can ride on most of the same tracks used by the professionals? It has been proposed to reopen them to the public on 9 June so if you hang around after the competition it’ll be all yours.
The Roch Ness Music Festival
On the other side of the glen is the Rock Ness Music Festival. This is held in the fields next to the Inverness-shire village of Dores on the shores of Loch Ness.
The Festival, now in its third year, is staging dozens of major and lesser known acts. Big name stars and acts such as Fatboy Slim, aka DJ Norman Cook, Razorlight and Editors will be performing… for as many as 30,000 music fans. Accommodation including tipis, Mongolian-style yurts and temporary homes made from waterproof plywood called Podpads have been offered to campers.
Both events have become established on Scotland and the UK’s summer entertainment and sporting calendars.
Some revellers, arriving early for previous Roch Ness Music Festivals have got so drunk the night before that they have ended up missing the event. Forewarned is forearmed and Supt. David O’Connor has warned that “anyone found to be in a drunk and incapable state will be apprehended for their own safety and they may end up missing the entire weekend as a result.” !!!
