We always knew the New Zealanders were one of the main innovators of extreme sport, but team them up with Red Bull and you are certain to get something very different… And here it is:
The Red Bull Rock Drop will challenge 80 DH mountain bikers to race to the bottom of a gold mine in New Zealand. The Martha Mine in Waihi is 250 meters (about 800 feet) deep and has slopes up to 70 degrees. It is still fully operational.
The terrain ranges from super hard slabs of quartz to soft volcanic ash so there’s guaranteed to be a variety of conditions from top to bottom.
This is going to be a one-of-a-kind type of race. Apparently the slopes are so steep that the trail setters had to be attached to fixed ropes! Riders will go down in groups of 4 making this essentially a 4X event. Red Bull promises “rock drops, gap jumps, mine trucks, free ride and speed lines” – thrills and spills there will doubtless be… great for spectators!
There’s a $10,000 prize up for grabs so competition is bound to be fierce.
