Getting knotty – the figure of 8, the Prussik, the double Fishermans and the Munter

If you are planning to go mountaineering here is a useful guide on ‘how to’ tie some knots. In this blog we cover the figure of 8 family of knots, the Prussik knot, the Double Fishermans knot, the Munter Hitch and tied off Munter Hitch.

Family of 8 knots

A swiftwater rescue instructor demonstrates the proper tying of the figure 8 family of knots – thanks eliteswiftwater

Prussik knot

This is a must know knot for any climber. Used for everything from self belay to crevasse rescue. Try this hitch out. It is real easy and this will get you out of a bind when nothing else will. Common knot for mountaineers who travel light in the big hills. Used to ascend a rope or self rescue out of a crevasse – thanks mikebarter387

Double Fishermans knot

Really nothing more then a slightly more complex single Fishermans knot. You are more likely to use this when hooking two climbing ropes together to rappel. You would also use this for joining a cordalette end together to form a loop – thanks mikebarter387

Munter Hitch and tied off Munter Hitch

This is a very useful belay knot. Why do people wander around with 3 or 4 belay devices on their harness. Get back to basics and learn the fundamentals of climbing. This knot is certainly one of those – thanks mikebarter387
