Extreme golf in an extreme location

This is probably the most extreme golf shot ever done and not one that many people are going to have the opportunity to do – or not for a while anyway … 1971 – a few quick shots on a lunar fairway (texassteak)

It was of course not a condoned shot. Light-heartedness on this level was frowned upon by Nasa, especially following the disaster of the Apollo 13 flight.

But although Apollo 14 had its share of hiccups, on 6th February 1971 Alan Shepard decided that we poor devils back on earth needed something to smile about… he smuggled a golf club and balls onboard inside his space suit, hit two balls just before lift-off, and drove them, as he put it, “miles and miles and miles”.

They are probably still orbiting!
