Summertime in Argentina – the perfect adventure destination

Our attention was recently drawn to a resort in Argentina that has something for everyone regardless of season – Las Leñas right over on the far left hand side of Argentina near the border of Chile. We have mentioned it briefly in the past, but it’s worth a second and probably even a third glance.

It’s their summer right now and you might well be looking for somewhere to go where the sun is guaranteed to shine and you can find something a little different to the run-of-the-mill winter break.

Las Leñas lies at about 2000m and is set in some very dramatic, arid mountains of many colours – black, red, orange, green and brown. It is a purpose built ski resort but open throughout the summer for the many activities that can be found in the region.

So how’s about some scuba diving with a difference?

High mountain scuba diving to be exact. At 2000m above sea level this is scuba with a difference. There are thousands of lakes, ponds and dams where you can scuba dive in Argentina, but in this particular area there is La Niña Encantada (The Enchanted Girl) near  Mendoza and the Valle Hermoso lagoon – both within easy distance of Las Leñas. The waters may be cold, but the rivers and lakes are crystal clear and the views magnificent.

You can kayak, white water raft, horse-ride, trek… rock climbing and rappel

You can also do something called the Tirolesa del grito. This is a new activity on offer. It’s a canopy ride that travels above the chairlift towers, over 80 meters high and with a length of 360 meters. Great fun and spectacular views.

There’s great mountain biking too with a wide variety of trails of different degrees of difficulty.

And of course the nearby legendary Cerro Aconcagua will beckon all serious mountain climbers – an attempt at its summit is not to be undertaken lightly. The 7 Flights – 7 Summits team have recently successfully summited this notoriously difficult mountain on their bid to climb the 7 Summits and paraglide from the top of each one. The highest mountain outside of Asia at 6,959m (22,830 ft) and the highest in the Southern Hemisphere, Aconcagua is a difficult mountain to conquer and on average two to three people are killed each year making the attempt.

The possibilities of having a holiday filled with adventure are endless…

And for those of you who just can’t bear to leave the smell of diesel fumes behind, you can always go on the ultimate 4 x 4 quest:

Argentina it is then, hmmm? There’s some outstanding polo as well!
